4camo deck fastening systemOct 19, 2011
By Penny Murphree
I resurfaced my existing 15 year old deck with new 5/4 decking and used the camo system for the deck and stair treads. I think it worked great. The "no exposed fasteners" gives the deck a very neat appearance. The hand-held jig is very easy to use and I was able to remove a couple of stair treads that my wife wanted replaced by backing out the screws. I do think it takes more screws that the manufacturer recommends. My joists were at 16" on center and I put two screws at every joist/deck board so it took a lot of screws. If you're going to do a large deck, get two jigs and a helper to install the screws, it'll go a lot faster. Also, as with most 5/4, pay attention to the warp in the deck boards. I found it worked better to put the outside of any bow toward the already-fastened board, set the middle of the deck board, then pull the ends into position and fasten them.

After having cut my feet on other deck plank fastners (nails & screws) when I was a kid, I really liked the idea of a hidden fastening system that allowed for easy removal of individual boards in the future. Other fastening systems I had seen would require you to take up many planks to get to a damaged one, but this method of toeing in screws in a small gap seems to work wonderfully.

I bought the cheaper jig b/c I did this work myself. I was able to get down 500 sqft. of 5/4x6 boards in about 30 hours and it looks great. I used treated lumber, so we'll have to see how the boards hold up to shrinking in the next 3-6 months.

Some things to note about using this system:
* Over-buy for the package's stated coverage amount. I ended up buying enough screws to do 650 sqft just for my 500 sqft deck. There were no fancy patterns to my board layout- just a 1/3 running bond over a 40' length using 12' boards.
* You will not be able to toe-in screws for boards running parallel close to a vertical plane (like a house). You may want to adjust your pattern so that it doesn't do this. I ended up just drilling screws straight down from the top of the boards in this instance, and because this was treated lumber, you can hardly even notice the pinholes that are left behind after the wood swells back around the countersunk screws.
* With 5/4" boards, you can only let your boards sit 1/2" out past your band joists before screws become visible. It's just the nature of the angle the jig makes. Thicker boards like 2x's will let you lip them out futher.
* Don't miss the joists when screwing down your boards. Once the head is countersunk in, the reverse threading at the head end of the screw makes it hard to back out to re-aim. This was a problem for me when having to butt two boards together over one joist.

No real complaints here, just somethings to watch for when getting the hang of using this system.

I'm very happy with the final look and feel of my deck surface. It's clean, and feels very solid. I reccommend this system to anyone who can budget for the pricepoint.
