5Super Tool, but there's a flaw! - READ MORENov 20, 2011
By Fred Williamson
Without a doubt Camo has a great system for installing deck board. I use it with Azek Deck and the system is simply the best out there. The Pro tool needs some redesign though. It's easy to use and clean, and requires no maintenance - that's the good part. The only bad part is the tool has a weak spot in the design of the upper handle. When you drive screws using this tool you must exert pressure downward on the upper handle to keep the bottom of the tool's surface in contact with the deck board, otherwise it can rise up and the screw holes will wind up in the wrong spot. The upper handle is stationary - to place the tool you pull up on the lower handle (against the upper handle) which spreads the jaws; when you release the lower handle the jaws clamp tightly on the deck board. The problem is that repeated downward pressure on the upper handle will eventually cause it to structurally fail inside the tool. The upper handle itself is plastic encapsulating a metal plate that is part of the stamped frame of the tool. There's a stress spot in the stamped metal frame of the tool and repeated use will cause it to fail at that point. When it fails the tool is useless.

I don't know what Camo (National Nail) will do about this yet... I just contacted them. This is definitely a weakness in the design and a fatigue failure of the metal in the stamping. This is a relatively new tool so my bet is they are aware of the problem and will redesign the tool to beef up this spot so the tool can take the stress of repeated use. It's a relatively easy thing for them to fix.

In the meantime, be aware that this tool should not be considered a heavy duty device. You'll drive a lot of screws with this tool, but it will eventually give up the ghost and you'll need another one. Mine failed after driving 4 large boxes of Camo screws; in the middle of a large deck project.

I encourage Camo to redesign the tool to eliminate this one weak spot - if they can remove this source of failure this is a 5 star tool!

***UPDATE*** I spoke with Camo about this... they are aware of the problem and already addressed it. New versions of the tool are already in distribution so this problem will be corrected. For people like me who received earlier versions Camo will replace the tool when you bring it in. I wish all companies did business this way. They listen to their customers, admit a minor design problem, correct it immediately, and take back defective units. I've upgraded my review to 5 stars and add outstanding customer support to the list of advantages of dealing with Camo!

5This is an incredible toolSep 01, 2011

I am so glad that the salesman who sold me the Azek decking also showed me this tool. I admit that I am not that knowledgable about deck fasteners, but wanted the look of the hidden fasteners. Since I live near the ocean, I knew that I had to go with stainless steel, and the prices that I had gotten on other systems (for an 800 sq ft deck) were through the roof. I was just about to give up when he showed me the Camo system.

It made sense, was suprisingly easy to get used to, and we have already made great progress (80% done), with just 2 of us working on it for 3 days.

I agree with the other reviewer, it makes for a long day of bending, etc. But you get great results, and money saved over more expensive systems.

It's a no brainer to get identical spacing throughout the entire project, and it adds a professional look to the project that would have taken a lot more steps to accomplish without the tool.

Yes, at the end of the day, you wind up with a one trick pony tool...but I'll hold onto one, just in case other projects or repairs come up, and the other, well, there's aways reselling.

5It works!Aug 28, 2011
By R. Jeremy Tschudin "RJ Tschudin"
This summer I tore out and old deck and built a new one, 500+ sq ft, 12" on center with expensive $4+ LF Azek and used the Camo system of hidden fasteners. I was concerned about the Camo system because of how much I was investing in the decking and it was so new (3/11) that there were no reviewers anywhere who had actually used the system on a project. All the "professional reviews (TOH and others) were positive but would it actually work?

Yup! It worked great. Out of the box I was a little concerned that the stapler-sized tool - Marksmen Pro - didn't look all that hefty (don't even consider the cheaper $29 version) but it held up perfectly and it worked perfectly - not one striped screw. The only time there was a problem is when I had not engaged the tool correctly, like it wasn't flat on the deck board or when after more than 1000 screws I used "drill " instead of "screw" on the driver. After you get the knack of the tool you can do this, just make sure the drill bit and the screw are totally engaged and start slow.

The tool sort of "toe nails" the screw in on an set angle in each board, one on each side. The special drill bit (required) has a stop that sets each screw to the proper depth. I bought an extra set of bits but didn't need them.

The screw holes do have some visibility, a little more a little less depending on the viewing angle, the color of the material and even the time of day. My decking is a darker color = less visibility, and the picture frame trim is a lighter color where the shadows caused by the counter sink are a bit more visible. I was especially concerned about this, again because the cost of the material, but I am very satisfied with the way it looks - not a problem, it looks great.

And then there's the cost, what a bargain. I did over 500 sq ft of 12" on-center decking for under $250, one third of some systems I priced.

One annoying thing is when you start the first screw, the torque from the screw jerks the material to the left so the board is not exactly where you want it. You can compensate with more pressure or starting with it more right than you want it but it is annoying. Maybe the manufacturer has a solution.

Installation is an "on-your knees hand job" so if you had a really big deck and had to work at it 8 hrs straight it could be a problem but the tool is only $50 and many hands make light work. The tool is easy to use and a tool-savvy wife could do this - no problem.

I would recommend this product because the results are great, the price is low and it's easy to use.
